Dean and chair seats, before the search firm is chosen.

Academic searches run for many months, and the firm is usually chosen at or before the search committee stage. This desk shows your partners which academic leadership seats are opening, and where each search stands, while there's still time to be considered.

Who we cover

The seats

EVP or VP for health affairs, combined dean and CEO, health sciences provost, dean, chief academic officer, chief research officer; vice and associate deans, department chairs, vice chairs, division chiefs, VP research, cancer center and institute directors, trustees and regents.

What opens them

Who usually decides

The provost or VP for health affairs, with the university president, for a dean. The dean, often with the health system CEO, for a department chair. The department chair for a division chief.

  • A dean or chair steps down, returns to faculty or leaves.
  • An interim is named, often with a national search to follow.
  • A search committee forms, or finalists are named. When a finalist is appointed, their home institution's seat opens too.
  • A new dean arrives and starts reviewing chairs.
  • A new institute, center or school is announced.
  • An academic affiliation is created, changed or ended.
  • Budget pressure or a downgrade.
